P.1 After Effects Alex's hand

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ujgHHec6HP8

This is my video which i have made ussing after effects and following a tutorial on youtube:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uoia5CV2EHA

What i did first of all was make sure i could get the flame as it would have been pointless me going through all the proccess and then realise that i couldnt finish it.
After that what i did was drag the hand video on to the timeline to make a composition.
Then i selected the clip and clicked on 'window' 'tracker controls' and finally i clicked on 'track motion' which is a little box that appears on the right bottom corner of the screen.
Which made two squares come up and i adjusted the big square first then the second one. After i placed it on the hand where i wanted the flame or the firework in this case to be.
then i went to 'layer' 'new' 'null object'
after that i clicked on edit target at the right bottom corner of the screen and i pressed the play button which pretty much tracked the hand.
i went to www.detonationfilms.com and got the firework from there.
I also added this clip to the timeline, i put it between the hand video and the null object. Which came up with a black background that i did not want.
So to get rid of it i changed the mode to add.
Selecting the flame layer go to 'effect; ;colour correction' then finally to curves and i just played around the curves to make it look nicer and more realistic.
'effect' 'blur and sharp' 'sharpen' then again just played around and see what i could get out of it.
'layer' 'new' 'solid' i named it 'orange glow' chose an orange colour and just grabbed the pen tool and roughly went around the firework and the hand. i placed this layer underneath the dull object one.
i played around with the feather and the opacity as i didnt want a weird shape right on top of my hand and firework.
I also changed the orange glow mode to 'add'
'effect' 'style ' glow'
Glow based on : changed it to Alpha Channel. Then i just played around with everything i could until i found exactly what i wanted it to look like.
That is it, i then exported it and uploaded it to youtube.

I didn't go out filming instead i used the mac to record a hand. It was tricky as the hand moved and as i did the fireworks instead of the flame. It didn't look that real which it was a bit annoying but I'm quite happy as this is my first project on after effects on my own.

P.1 Visual Effects Analysis

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rOdlLYqKFrw

There is only one scene or two where the after effects have been used which is when Jasper and ruby are sitting down in class and she asks him if she can borrow his oen as hers has just ran out. Then he opens his bag, grabs the pen and he goes to give it to her but then he drops it and this is where he uses his powers to pick up the pen and make it float to her hand. There is only 1-2 scenes of this effect, and i have found a tutorial on youtube that will be useful for me to follow.

This video could also help:
This effect could also be used when he feels something wrong with his right hand...

P.1 180 degree rule

Its important to choose one side where you are going to be filming when two characters are having a conversation, as if you cross the line it would look like the characters just jumped from one side to the other and it wouldn't look like they are having a conversation.
That imaginary line between the two characters its called 'axis'
If the camera crosses the line its called jumping the line or crossing the line.

P.1 meeting

Team Production Meeting

Alex Purvis, Paula Perez and Louis Davis were in this meeting.

Scrip Choice
We have chosen to do Louis’ script as its easier to film and more realistic.
We are going to take parts from the other two scripts as they’ve got some interesting bits that we thought we should add on to it.
Louis and Alex’s friend will be acting in the film.
This film will be filmed at Long Road. It will me filmed round mid day.
The effects used in this film will be achievable as its not too professional to do.
We believe this script will be the easiest because it looks easier and you don’t need a teacher or a mother to act.
Louis is acting and sound effects
Alex is directing
Paula is the editor
We will al be doing the after effects together.

She doesnt read any book as she is too usy going out with her friends and going shopping. She is the kind of person that looks down on you just because how she has been raised and because all the money she has.
She has light brown straight hair with a few wavey bits. He hair falls all the way to the middle of her back. She was quite tall and skinny, she pretty much looked like one of them girls that boys would turn around and stare at her. She fell in love with Michael when she was 12 and she wanted to be with him ever since. P.1 Draft revision

P.1 Draft with comments

P.1 Characters biography Allie

Allie Stewart.
She was born on the 12th of March 1996. She lived with her mum as her dad didn't care about her or anyone else in the world apart from his money, therefore she did not want anything to do with him whatsoever, he was as dead to her as she was to him.
She lived in America then when all the supernatural started to happen she had no choice but to move to England.
She is an open minded person when it comes to music but her favourite category would be heavy metal, rock and Indie. She would read books such as Bukwoski. She loved all of his books but specially 'You get so alone at time that it just makes sense'
Shes never really had a lot of friends as she has to keep changing colleges and everyone knows about what their family are capable of. They're just freaks according to everyone in town, but then again they're just rumours. Or thats what they think anyway.
She is a 17 year old girl with long black wavy hair. Different from all the blonde girls at her new college. She had this green beautiful eyes that no one has ever seen. She had long eyelashes and pink cheeks. She wore no make whatsoever as she was naturally beautiful. She wore jumpers with mid length skirts, she dressed quite old fashioned which is one of the reasons why everyone thought she was a freak.
She was average height and average weight. She wasn't anorexic like most of the girls at college.
The fact that her dad used to be brutal to her and her mum made a big impact in her life. It changed her life around but she doesn't regret what happened as it made her such a strong person and gave her strength to do things she would never do before. That's how she realised she had powers. With all the anger built up in her she couldn't control herself and ended up hurting her dada without meaning to.
What Allie is trying to achieve in this screen play is fight against her father and end up with him as if she doesn't he will end up with her and her mother and maybe the whole town as he is powerful too. Her mother doesn't have any powers whatsoever and she doesn't know about her ex husband having any either which is why Allie has to stick with her.
Her motivation is to finish the evil and be able to control her powers as she wont be able to have a normal life and keep her powers otherwise.

Her mum has been really ill recently and she promised her mum that she wouldn't use her powers anymore, and that she will try to have a normal life and look after her. Just be a normal teenager.

P.1 Foley Sound and Sound Effects

Foley sounds:

Foley sounds are like sound effects which are added in films, tv series and even video games.
Such as to make the impact of bone breaking sound can be done with breaking leek which is how one of the foley artist does it.
It can create horror sounds which are really effective for horror movies and builds up the tension for the viewer. Every single horror film has some kind of foley sound in it.
They also make the footsteps for the characters to make it more dramatic and noticeable and inform the viewer of the details.
A lot of people fail at making foley sounds because they don't have the qualities that it requires such as timing and a creative mind.
The advantages of using real sounds for the special effects is that it attracts the audience as they might recognise the sounds.

This is how Ben Burton found the real sound for the laser guns in Star wars.

P.1 Research into Recording Ambient Sounds and Dialogue

Recording Ambient Sound:

Ambient sound recording is the noise you can hear on the background without having any character interrupt it. Such as when you can hear the birds tweeting and the wind. That is ambient sound but it stops being ambient sound when you can hear someone footsteps.
Ambient sound is very important in film as it creates continuity in films between shots so there is not rough sound cut to mess up the sequence.
Its also important because it creates an atmosphere to the audience and helps them get into the characters body as you can hear exactly what they can hear.

The advantage of recording ambient sound while filming is that you are going to get exactly what is in the scene and at the exact same time as the action happen so you don't have to worry about getting the sound you need from the library such as in free sound.org and make sure the sound fits the video on premiere pro.
Hard cuts should be used between two shots because it would jump and would not flow therefore the sons would change dramatically and it would look like like there was no effort put in it.

Recording dialogue:

Recording dialogue is important while shooting a conversation because you get the character talking at the same time as the dialogue is playing and also you get the ambient sound which make it look more complete instead of just having the clip and recording the dialogue and adding it to the sequence.
Also if you do that you have to make sure it links well.

Looping consists on the characters looking at their original clip and them recording themselves talking to make sure they get the dialogue at the same time as the clip to make it flow naturally.
Location shooting might be hard to capture as the characters might be too far away from the character and you might not be able to hear what they are saying. To solve this problem the best thing to do its record the original clip with just ambient sound and then record what the character says with a microphone and add the two sounds. The dialogue and the ambient sound together to make it flow.

P.1 xmen timeline

In this short clip from the film Xmen there is never dialogue and voice over at the same time because of the obvious reason that if you do that you wouldn't be able to understand anything as there will be two voices talking at the same time.
The music plays all throughout the clip to make it flow as the clip as a lot of different locations and it would sound quite rough listening to all the different background noises. This is why music just mutes the background noises a bit so the music goes over it. The music also tell you the environment of the school, it's a calm and nice music.
The special effects are important as it would be rubbish without them. You wouldn't hear the ball bouncing on the floor or the ice falling on the ground and breaking. It would look like a simple clip with just digetic sound music and a clip.

P.1 Composing music

Know what the director wants:

Director might not always be experienced with the music industry as its not their job, therefore you need to listen to what the director wants and expects you to compose and do so.
He/she might just tell you the kind of mode you need to create, such as for example; young girl meets boy and immediately falls in love. You would need to be able to expose the feelings for these two characters passing the emotions from the characters onto the audience to create the atmosphere that the director wants you to create.

Experiment:

Sit there and don't be afraid of experimenting with your laptop, guitar or however it is you're going to create music. You don't lose anything by experimenting as long as you don't miss the deadline!
You might have to create a type of music you're not used to or have little experience in therefore its good to mess around with different tones and tempos.
Sometimes the most effective music choices are the ones that you don't expect and you just don't think its going to work but you won't know unless you try new things and experience.

Immense yourself and live the product:

Watch the film for the first time normally just to get the story line and know what is happening between the character, what is the situation, the problem and the climax.
Then watch it again and pick up on details such as how they have used the sound and the editing. Then as silly as it sounds, let the film play on the background while you're doing something else even if you're not watching it your brain will get used to it.

Watch the film with no sound:

Also watch the clip with no sound and your brain might make up a soundtrack for it, but you must do this without having watched the film as otherwise you already know the originally soundtrack.
You will notice details you might have not noticed if you watched it with sound.

Know the feelings of the characters:

You need to know how the characters are feeling because music is all about emotion and even if its not shown you might have to transmit some sort of emotion from one character through the other one with music. You might put yourself into the main character's situation and think about how that character might feel in the situation and how it would react to it. That way you will start to think about what music you want to create and think its appropriate to play on the background of that scene.

Know the beat

Its really important you know the beat to the film you're about to compose the song to. If you're supposed to create and eerie atmosphere you can't have pop music or r&b music playing on the background because it would create a completely different beat. You might consider playing classical music or a lullaby such as these ones

P.1 After Effects

P.1 Submarine Music Analysis

The genre of the music of this clip is classical.
You can hear the instruments such as a violin, piano, strings, orchestra and a flute.
The tempo is calm yet up beat at the same tie which creates emotion. Its like our main character Oliver Tate composed it himself. It reflects his emotions such as happiness.

The purpose of this music during that clip is that its a montage and you can hear the voice over of him telling the story of his life, his diary. The music on the background fills up the empty space behind the dialogue and makes it more interesting to the viewer as it can get a bit boring, but the lively music helps keep the viewer engaged.
It's kind of like his thinking music, which can relate to the audience as i personally have a thinking song i put on.
This song is magical kind of like an imaginary world for out main character which links to the narrative as he is quite a different guy compare to the rest.
Also the fact that classical musical is played on the background shows that  his different too as you wouldn't imagine a 15 year old listening to that genre of music.

P.1 What does music in film do?

Music in film is used to:

Create an atmosphere and also creates a mood and triggers emotion such as happiness and sadness.
it also emphasis an action.
The pase of the film helps the narrative flow.
Music can also replace dialogue such as for example in silent films.
Also music can establish a location, culture and even a character. For example in jaws as soon as we hear the sound we know straight away that the shark is there even if we dont see it.

There are different kid on sounds that can be added to a film such as:
Diegetic sound which is what the characters can hear which is made on set.
Non diegetic is completely the opposite as its made in a studio, kind of like foley sounds.
Sound effects, ambient sounds, character themes, amplified sound, soundbridge, contrapunta, major and minor key, soundscape, sound narrative, sonic wallpaper and finally distorted music can also be added.
